18 aprile 2011: dopo 82 minuti di gara contro la Reggina, un difensore del Torino è sostituito dopo una prestazione pessima, con qualche fischio da parte dei tifosi. Quel giocatore era Danilo D'Ambrosio.
Quello è stato l'ultimo match cui ho assistito all'Olimpico, e nonostante non sia mai molto raccomandabile mettere alle sordina un singolo giocatore per una brutta prestazione, D'Ambrosio giocò veramente male quella sera, e giunsi addirittura a pensare che quella avrebbe potuto essere la sua ultima partita in granata.
E invece, meritatamente, il difensore napoletano ha completamente ribaltato la propria sorte, giungendo, meno di due anni dopo, a vincere contro il Pescara indossando la fascia da capitano, e potendo ormai definirsi uno dei più affidabili di tutta la rosa del Torino.
D'Ambrosio arrivò in granata dalla Juve Stabia nel gennaio 2010, dopo il c.d. 'caso Di Michele', che costrinse il Club a cercare un gran numero di rinforzi, e come terzino destro dalla grande propensione offensiva fu uno degli elementi cardine dell'avanzata che permise inaspettatamente al Torino di raggiungere la finale playoff con Colantuono in panchina.
Nonostante le ottime premesse, però, Danilo non riuscì a replicarsi nella stagione successiva, anche se, è doveroso notarlo, non furono in molti i giocatori ad eccellere nella stagione 2010/2011, nella quale il Toro si piazzò disastrosamente ottavo in Serie B.
E' stato, comunque, nella stagione in corso che D'Ambrosio ha veramente impressionato, spesso schierato nell'innaturale posizione di terzino sinistro, nella quale si è trovato per la carenza di alternative di ruolo, e nonostante sia un giocatore sempre votato all'attacco mi hanno impressionato i suoi enormi miglioramenti sul lavoro difensivo.
Come se non bastasse... ha contribuito alla causa già con due goal, entrambi di testa, e ciò mi fa chiedere se, onestamente, ci sia oggi un difensore in Serie A più efficace nel gioco aereo di Danilo sotto porta? Sinceramente, io non ne ho visti finora.
La sfida di domenica scorsa contro il Pescara, peraltro, ha rappresentato una svolta nella carriera di Danilo nel Torino, non solo per aver indossato la fascia da Capitano, ma anche per essere stato preferito a quello che finora è sempre stato il titolare nel ruolo di terzino destro, lo squalificato Matteo Darmian. Inutile dire che questo dovrebbe far riflettere su un suo auspicato ritorno nella propria posizione naturale...
Sicuramente si tratterebbe di una mossa azzeccata perché nelle ultime due gare la combinazione tra D'Ambrosio e Cerci si è dimostrata particolarmente efficace, e probabilmente non è stata solo una coincidenza che il Torino nelle ultime uscite sia stato molto più frizzante, oltre ad essere stato premiato da due vittorie.
Insomma, incrociamo le dita sperando che Danilo possa perseverare nel suo stato di forma nella seconda metà della stagione, ma speriamo non esageri... attirandosi troppe attenzioni di altri Club interessati a portarselo via!

It is April 18th 2011. After 82 minutes of a match against Reggina, a Torino full back is substituted and put after his misery after a terrible performance and is booed by the home fans. That player’s name? Danilo D’Ambrosio
The match was the last match that I attended at the Stadio Olimpico, and whilst it is never nice to single out a player for a bad performance, D’Ambrosio was truly awful that night – and I genuinely felt he may never play for the club again. However, to his credit, the Napoli born defender has turned his fortunes around totally – and less than two years after this match, he captained the Granata against Pescara on Sunday and has become one of the team’s most consistent performers.
D’Ambrosio arrived at Torino from Juve Stabia in January 2010 after the ‘Davide Di Michele Incident’ which left the club needing a number of reinforcements. Primarily a right back who liked to attack, he was a key member of the Torino side that unexpectedly reached the playoff final under Stefano Colantuono.
However despite that early promise, Danilo was not able to replicate that form in the following season – although to be fair, not many players really excelled in the 2010/11 campaign where Toro disastrously finished 8th.
But it has been this current season where Danilo D’Ambrosio has really stood out – often in an unnatural position of left back, where he has been made to fill in due to Torino’s lack of choice in that position. Whilst he is still willing to get forward at every opportunity, it has also been his defensive work that has particularly impressed me this season.
Danilo has also helped out with two goals this season (both of which were headers) and this makes me wonder if there is a full back in Serie A who is better in the air than Danilo D’Ambrosio? I honestly can’t think of one, and as I come to think of it, I think every goal he has scored for Torino has been a header.
Sunday’s match against Pescara was perhaps a turning point in Danilo’s Torino career, because not only was he given the captain’s armband – he was also picked ahead of first choice right back Matteo Darmian, which suggests he may get a run of games in his favourite position.
This would certainly not be a bad thing, as in the last two matches, the combination between D’Ambrosio and Alessio Cerci has been extremely promising, and it is probably not a coincidence that Toro have been more entertaining in recent weeks, and have been rewarded with two victories.
Fingers crossed that Danilo can continue this form in the second half the season, but let’s hope he doesn’t stand out too much – or else other teams may become interested in signing him.
