Solo nove giocatori nella storia del Torino hanno segnato più goal di Rolando Bianchi. Al di là di questa statistica, peraltro, c'è ancora incertezza circa l'opportunità di offrire al Capitano un nuovo contratto, oppure lasciarlo partire da svincolato.
Se tu menzioni il nome 'Rolando Bianchi' ad un qualunque appassionato di calcio in Inghilterra, questo ti risponderà con un sorrisetto ironico - ricordando la disgraziata avventura dell'attaccante al Manchester City, dopo Rolando, nonostante l'indubbio impegno, sembrava sbagliare anche le cose più semplici (quelle occasioni che qui definiamo "sitters", in quasi ogni partita. In ogni caso, se non è riuscito a dimostrare il proprio valore nel calcio inglese, c'è da dire che neppure in Italia Bianchi avesse una media goal eccezionale prima di firmare per il Torino. A questo punto, però, non sarebbe esagerato dire che nella stagione 2009/2010 è stato proprio Rolando Bianchi a trascinare, quasi da solo, con i propri goal il Toro verso una promozione crudelmente negata solo dalla finale playoff contro il Brescia.
Dando un'occhiata veloce alle sue reti in quella stagione, sicuramente la migliore in maglia granata, è facile comprendere perché sia diventato un idolo di questa piazza. Potente fisicamente, gran lavoratore, eccellente nel gioco aereo e tecnicamente dotato, Bianchi è stato semplicemente troppo forte per le difese di Serie B, come testimoniano i suoi 26 goal.
Lo scorso anno, tuttavia, quando il Toro ha finalmente ottenuto la promozione, Bianchi è stato sorprendentemente sotto le aspettative, ed ha avuto problemi a trovare la miglior condizione per gran parte della stagione. Ciononostante, è comunque andato a segno 8 volte, regalando ai granata le vittorie fondamentali contro Vicenza e Sampdoria, che hanno cementato la posizione del Toro come maggior candidato alla lotta promozione. In questa stagione di Serie A, Bianchi ha iniziato bene, ed è il capocannoniere del Toro con 6 centri, ma ci sono ancora dubbi circa il suo nuovo contratto. Tuttavia, al di là delle questioni appena menzionato, mi pare quasi folle lasciar partire Bianchi a costo zero a fine stagione. Il Torino ha sempre fatto fatica a segnare con regolarità dopo essere tornato nella massima serie A, e rinunciare al contributo di un giocatore il cui valore è comunque provato mi pare davvero un'assurdità, specialmente se questo significa che il Toro dovrebbe, a questo punto, trovare due attaccanti di qualità, quando già ha sufficiente difficoltà a trovarne ancora uno.
Anche a livello economico, peraltro, credo si tratto di un'operazione poco sensata: Rolando merita di essere gratificato per il contributo dato al Torino, per aver scelto di rimanere nel Club anche in Serie B quando tanti altri hanno scelto di andarsene. Merita, inoltre, un plauso per essere sempre sceso in campo dimostrando il proprio orgoglio di indossare la fascia da capitano del Torino, sulla scia di tanti altri giocatori leggendari, ed in una squadra che, nelle stagioni recenti, ha avuto pochissimi altri giocatori in cui identificarsi. Io credo, insomma, che anche dovesse lasciare il Toro la prossima estate, Rolando Bianchi meriti di essere perlomeno ricordato come una di queste icone.

Only nine players in the history of Torino FC have scored more goals than Rolando Bianchi. However despite this statistic, there is still uncertainty around whether the Toro captain should be offered a new contract, or whether he should be allowed to leave the club on a free transfer.
If you to mention the name ‘Rolando Bianchi’ to knowledgeable football fans in England, they would like respond with a small chuckle – remembering the striker’s ill-fated spell at Manchester City, where despite giving 100% every week, he also seemed to miss an easy chance (often known in England as a ‘sitter’) in every match too.
Therefore, although he was unable to demonstrate his ability in English football – his goal scoring record since signing for Torino has been nothing short of remarkable. It would be no exaggeration to say that in the 2009/10 season, Rolando Bianchi almost single-handedly fired Toro to a promotion back to Serie A, before they were cruelly denied by Brescia in the Playoff final.
A quick look at his goals from that campaign – undoubtedly his finest in a Torino shirt – and it is easy to see why he became an idol to the Granata fans. Strong, hardworking, outstanding in the air, and technically adept, Bianchi was simply too good for Serie B defences, illustrated by his tally of 26 goals.
When Torino finally earned promotion last season, Bianchi was surprisingly under par, and struggled to find his best form for much of the season. That being said, he still managed to score 8 times, including vital late winners against Vicenza and Sampdoria which cemented Toro’s position as promotion challengers early in the season.
This campaign, Bianchi has started well, and is Torino’s top scorer with 6 goals, yet there are still doubts about that new contract. A combination of factors, including his age, high wages, and inconsistency seem to have dissuaded President Urbano Cairo that he is worth a new contact.
However, despite those flaws that I have just mentioned, it is my view that it would be extremely foolish to allow Bianchi leave for nothing at the end of the season. Torino have struggled to score goals regularly since returning to the top flight, and therefore to choose not to retain the services of a proven Serie A goal scorer would make little sense to me – especially as it would then mean Toro would need to find two top quality strikers…and we have had enough trouble finding one.
I also believe that, whilst it may not make financial sense, Rolando deserves to be rewarded for his service to Torino, for choosing to stay with the club in Serie B when so many chose to leave. He also deserves praise for always walking onto the pitch looking proud to wear the captain’s armband of Torino, following in the footsteps of so many legendary players – and in a team that has had so few icons in recent seasons, even if he does leave in the summer, Rolando Bianchi deserves to be remembered as one of those icons.
